22 March 2012

When the Republicans revealed their 2013 budget plan this week, I had one question: Why are the Republicans obsessed with destroying Medicare?

Once again, they are asking seniors to be the first to sacrifice. That’s simply not acceptable, and that’s why the Republican plan to end Medicare was defeated last year. It’s not going to pass this year, either.

In reality, we shouldn’t be having this conversation all over again. Medicare is a vitally important program to all Americans, and we owe it to our senior citizens to ensure that Medicare is strong and protected. But here we are, forced into a déjà vu debate on the future of Medicare, when we should really be talking about how the oil companies can do more to help balance the budget.

Let me make it perfectly clear: Medicare is non-negotiable. Budgets that consistently target seniors and do nothing to have the oil companies contribute more represent a failure of American values, and we need a different approach.

New Territory

20 March 2012

I've just received some important news. The courts have approved new Congressional district lines, and my new constituency is going to be 60% new territory and new people.

I'm excited and can't wait to go to work in these areas.

While I currently represent a district mostly in Suffolk County, with a small amount of Nassau, my new district is going to stretch the entire north shore: from the Nissequogue River in Smithtown to the Whitestone Bridge in Queens.  This is a monumental shift of district boundaries, and the news arrived just before our first critical fundraising deadline this year: the Federal Election Commission (FEC) reporting deadline on March 31st.

Help us reach our fundraising goal of $25,000 before the midnight on March 31st. Contribute $25 today.

We’re facing tremendous new challenges. Challenges I am enthused to embrace: introducing myself to new areas I have not represented in the past...preparing to face an opponent at home...and continuing my national leadership responsibilities as Chairman of DCCC.

It won't be easy.

That’s why we’ve set an aggressive goal of raising $25,000 by the critical FEC deadline on March 31st. Click here to contribute $25 toward our goal now.

Your support has always provided the strength of our campaign, and I hope I will be able to count on you this time as well. With so much changing in such a short amount of time, these next eight months are going to be tougher than ever. I deeply appreciate your consideration to help out my re-election campaign once more.

The right bill at the right time

15 March 2012

First of all, thank you to everyone who signed our petition supporting the Bring the Jobs Home Loan Act. As my colleagues in Congress review the bill, I’ll make sure they know it matters to us.

Our petition is about more than a single a bill. It’s about the kind of future we want for our communities and the entire country. It’s about taking meaningful action that creates high quality jobs and economic strength. It’s time to bring manufacturing back home.

If you didn’t get a chance to sign the petition, you can still add your name.

Or if you’ve already signed the petition, take a moment to share the petition on Facebook.

Despite all the claims by doomsayers, manufacturing jobs are coming back. Day after day, we learn that companies are expanding their American operations and opening new facilities. The positive trends should make us smile, but they also confirm that this is the right bill at the right time.

Businesses want to bring their manufacturing operations back now, and we must pass the Bring the Jobs Home Act to help them do it. Thank you for showing your support.

Do you want to bring the jobs home?

8 March 2012

Congressman Israel wants to bring back the jobs that have been shipped overseas. He introduced the Bring the Jobs Home Loan Act, and he challenged us to gather 1,000 signatures of grassroots support.

Do you want to bring the jobs home? I know you do – we all do. Right now, we can do something about it. We need you to voice your support and show Congress that the public is behind this bill.

It’s time to bring the jobs home! Sign the petition, and help us reach our goal of 1,000 signatures.

We’ve already gathered more than 300 signatures in the first 48 hours since we launched our petition.  That’s a great start, and thanks to everyone who signed the petition already.

This bill will help American businesses reinvest in manufacturing jobs here at home. For years, the financial bottom line has worked against American jobs. When we pass this bill, the equation changes, and businesses will have a financial incentive to bring their operations, their jobs, and their payrolls back home.

We need your support to pass this bill. Help us reach 1,000 signatures. Add your name now!

Congressman Israel introduced the Bring the Jobs Home Loan Act because he knows it’s a workable solution to a real problem. This bill represents rare common ground in today’s political climate, and we’re doing everything we can to make sure it passes.

Click here to help us pass this bill and bring the jobs home: Sign the petition now.

Thank you for taking action today and making a difference in our effort to bring the jobs home.

P.S. If you’ve already signed the petition, thank you. Please spread the word. Forward our petition to your friends and family, and share the petition on Facebook.

Take Action: Bring the Jobs Home

6 March 2012

The plain fact is that we need to create more jobs in America. Everyone can see that.

I’ve spoken with manufacturers who want to bring their jobs back home, but the financial reality today keeps their operations – and their paychecks – offshore. It’s time to change that, and that’s why I introduced the Bring the Jobs Home Loan Act of 2012.

Stand with me in support of the Bring the Jobs Home Loan Act: Sign the petition today.

Too many American manufacturers see a financial incentive to hire workers in other countries. These businesses aren’t anti-American – they’re struggling to keep their doors open in a tough economy.

The Bring the Jobs Home Loan Act changes the equation by providing incentives for manufacturers to reinvest in making products in the United States.  We need to pass this bill and stop shipping so many jobs overseas.

Show your support for creating jobs in America. Sign the petition here.

There’s a loud debate on Long Island, in Washington, and in every town and city across the country about how to create more jobs. One extreme seems to think that there’s nothing the government can do to help. The other extreme seems to claim that government has all the answers.

I firmly believe that there is common ground where the private sector and government can work together to create badly-needed jobs for American workers. As the Bring the Jobs Home Loan Act circulates through Congress, it’s critical to show strong grassroots support for this legislation.

Help us reach 1,000 signatures in support of the Bring the Jobs Homes Loan Act. Click here to sign the petition NOW!

When American manufacturers have the choice between creating jobs in America or overseas, the bottom line usually drives the decision. Together, we can change the equation and make it financially compelling to bring jobs back to America. The Bring the Jobs Home Loan Act does just that, and showing your support today will make a difference.

This isn't politics, it's personal

21 February 2012

Recently, we found out that a Tea-Party backed candidate got the Republican nomination to run against Congressman Israel in the coming election. What we didn’t know was that our opponent isn’t running because of the issues or ideology – instead, for him, this is personal.

At a Republican gathering late last week, our opponent set the stage for an ugly, nasty campaign by saying things like: "I enjoy a good scrap…Steve Israel will have the fight taken to him like he's never had before." That’s not a policy disagreement, that’s personal.

Help Congressman Israel fight back! Chip in $5 today to our defense fund!

We can respect differing ideas and opinions, but politics shouldn’t be about personal vendettas. With rhetoric like this, there is no doubt our opponent has a personal problem with Congressman Israel, not just a differing idea of a future America: "Being the tip of the spear is exactly where I want to be…I never accept defeat. Steve Israel has no idea what's coming toward him. I actually pity him."

For our opponent, it’s not about real issues, like the GOP’s plan to destroy Medicare as we know it, or cutting back on things like the commuter tax credits that affect more than just middle class wallets in Long Island. He’s itching for a personal fight.

Congressman Israel isn’t going to just sit back and take it. Donate $5 today to help him fight back!

This election is about standing up for what’s right for Long Island. It’s about the future of the middle class and our country as a whole – things that move our country forward, not backwards.

There is no room here for personal attacks. With your help, we’ll be ready to fight back.

And so it begins

16 February 2012

It's official. Our campaign now has a Tea Party-backed candidate running against us for New York's 2nd District. While this news doesn't come as a shock, it does put more pressure on us to be prepared.

Our opponent has been prepping for this race for over two years, when he first tried to get on the ballot in 2010. He’s been raising money and building his campaign since then, and now, with the Tea Party and Republican endorsement, he thinks he’s ready for prime time.

Help us stop him in his tracks! Chip in just $5 today to put the brakes on the Tea Party!

The Tea Party has been trying to run the country for just over a year now, and look where it’s gotten us. The candidates ran for Congress on the platform of "jobs, jobs, jobs," but instead, they've been attacking women's health care and tax cuts for the Middle Class. They've brought us to the brink of a government shut down three times now, and even caused our country’s credit rating to be downgraded. That hasn't done much for our nation's economic recovery.

As for jobs bills? None. They've attacked the most vulnerable among us by doing nothing at all. The Tea Party run Congress has been the least effective Congress since 1812, and we don’t need to add to it by sending another member to Washington!

Help Congressman Israel fight back against the Tea Party! Chip in $5 now:

The Tea Party has sacrificed the average American time and time again for a misguided ideology that has produced no positive results. It’s time to put things right.

Thanks for standing with Congressman Israel this election cycle.

10 February 2012

Yesterday, you made a difference. The House of Representatives passed the STOCK Act, preventing Congressmen and their staffs from using privileged knowledge obtained through their work to make personal profit. This bill was far overdue, and our petition was successful, although this fight isn’t over.

The bill that passed yesterday was a weaker version of the Senate bill, and there is bipartisan disappointment that the House Republicans watered it down. We have more work to do, and it starts with this Fall’s elections and taking back the House!

Help us win in November! Chip in $5 today for our re-election campaigns.

The Republican leadership doesn’t see anything wrong with some parts of profiteering off of Congressional knowledge, which is why they put up a weaker version of the Senate bill. It’s time to get to work winning back the House so we can pass the rest of the provisions the Senate bill offered.

The STOCK Act is the right thing to do, and it’s important that we work to further prevent the abuse of public trust in the hands of elected officials and their staff.

Your donation of even just $5 today will make a difference come November.

Thank you for standing with me and Congresswoman McCarthy with yesterday’s petition and for your continued support of our efforts.

There is no law that prevents Members of Congress from using privileged information to make themselves a personal profit. That's wrong. But it's not illegal. And that has to change, NOW.

Congress is elected to do ONE thing - serve the public. Instead, some Members of Congress have been using the privileged information they have access to as legislators for the purpose of trading and other financial transactions, making money for themselves.

That's wrong. But it's not illegal. There is no law that prevents Members of Congress from using privileged information to make themselves a personal profit. And that has to change, NOW.

The STOCK Act is before Congress - a bill that bans Members and their staffs from using non-public information for personal financial transactions. And it has to pass. We are co-sponsoring this bill, and are pressuring our colleagues to pass the STOCK Act. We need your help.

Please sign our petition NOW and call on the House of Representatives to pass the STOCK Act IMMEDIATELY!

Members of Congress should be subjected to the same rules the rest of Americans are. And we didn't run for office to become wealthy. We ran for Congress to make a difference by serving the public. Help us make insider trading illegal for Members of Congress.

Call on the House of Representatives to pass the STOCK Act immediately!

During his State of the Union address, President Obama said if we send him the STOCK Act, he'll sign it into law immediately. Now's our chance to make that happen.

Thank you,

Congressman Steve Israel

Wow! Not only did we hit our $25,000 goal for the month, we exceeded it!

Thank you for showing what can be done when a group of dedicated people get together and all do their part. If it were not for all of the small donations of $5 or $10, reaching this goal would not have been possible. As a group, we can accomplish anything.

I hope you will join me on Facebook and Twitter, so I can better update you on what I am doing in Washington, DC and here at home to fight for Long Islanders every day.

Newsday reports that Republicans are working to recruit candidates against me right now, which is why your support this past month was so important and why it’ll be even more crucial in the future.

Thank you for helping me protect Long Island.
