Tax Hike on Commuters

At the stroke of midnight this past New Year's eve, my commute got a LOT more expensive. And I bet yours did, too.

That’s when a provision allowing commuters like us to use pre-tax dollars to pay for train tickets expired, cutting the benefit almost in half, essentially charging you an extra $1000 to get to work this year.

It amounts to a fare hike for all of Long Island – and it affects YOU! Congressman Steve Israel has been working to get this fixed since before New Year’s Eve, and we need your help.

Help us tell Congress this is important TODAY. Become a citizen co-sponsor of Congressman Israel’s efforts to re-instate this pre-tax benefit and make it permanent!

I live in Northport, and I work in the financial sector in New York City. I take the train every day to and from work, like so many of us do. I enjoy my time on the train, and my wife likes that I don’t have to drive in rush hour traffic. The benefits of mass transit are important to public health and to the environment. This tax provision also puts money in my pocket to spend on more important things, like our two kids.

I know I’m not alone in this. It affects everyone on Long Island, if you commute or not, and it affects your employers, who now pay more in taxes, too.  It’s money in your pocket or its traffic congestion on our roads, and it affects our country’s economic recovery.

Sign on to be a citizen co-sponsor today, and tell Congress to fix this! Long Islanders shouldn’t have to pay more for their mass transit commutes, now or later.

Thanks for your help, and I’ll see you on the LIRR.

Sincerely, Mike Kiesel
