Meet Steve Israel

Steve Israel was elected to Congress in 2000 and has proven to be a leader in Congress on the issues of energy security, military readiness and economic success.

He serves on the powerful House Appropriations Committee, which sets funding levels for the federal government.  As a member of the Foreign Operations Subcommittee, Israel works to set funding levels for all state and international programs.  He also holds a seat on the Energy and Water Subcommittee, which sets priorities for federal energy programs.

In Congress, Congressman Israel is fighting for a middle class success package to create sustainable economic growth with new investments and targeted tax incentives. He has led the fight in Congress to fix an unfair tax that targets families in high cost areas like Long Island, called the alternative minimum tax (or AMT).

As co-chair of the Long Island Sound Caucus, a bipartisan group of Members that work on protecting the Sound, Israel fought to secure much-needed federal funding for the preservation of the Sound.  He also co-chairs the bipartisan House Cancer Caucus a measure to promote promising research to fight ovarian cancer.  On the Appropriations Committee Israel fought for passage of a record increase in veterans benefits to help the men and women returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Steve Israel is a member of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's Recruitment Task Force, responsible finding and assisting House candidates in the Northeast.

He has been listed as a "Democrat to Watch" by National Journal magazine and a "rising star" by Newsday.

Congressman Israel lives in Huntington with his wife and has two daughters in college.
